What will happen in a Paediatric sleep study?

There are 2 varieties of sleep study available to be done at home in children –

Level 1 study/ Polysomnography (PSG)

The sleep study accredited for children by AASM will have the following parameters measured. Whenever the child is ready for bed, the technician from our team will set up the following sensors:

A soft probe is wrapped around the toe to monitor their oxygen levels while asleep.

Two ECG pads on chest to measure the heart rate.

Two stretchy bands around the chest to record breathing movements.

A small position sensor on the chest to record the position in which child is sleeping.

A small tube on the edge of the nostrils to monitor breathing rate..

A small sensor either on the thigh or below the collarbone to monitor carbon dioxide levels.

The above test is expensive but possible by www.booksleepstudy.com where we offer one of the best and only places in Mumbai to offer Pediatric Polysomnography

Level 3 study :

We also offer the level 3 studies of children which is like an adult level 3 study. It is used to specifically diagnose only OSA in children. Can be used in children with a high pre-test probability of OSA.

Level 1 sleep study (PSG) vs. Level 3:

In children, PSG (level 1 sleep studies) are generally recommended as the gold standard for diagnosing sleep apnea. However, level 3 sleep tests are considered an alternative in children at high risk for OSA who cannot or will not be able to undergo a PSG.

Level 3 sleep studies cannot diagnose other sleep disorders besides sleep apnea. If you suspect a child to have any other disorder like arousal disorders, snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS), central sleep apnea (CSA), restless leg syndrome, insomnia and night time sleep behaviour/parasomnias, a level 1 study is advised.

Consult your doctor or a sleep specialist or our sleep consultant on www.booksleepstudy.com if you need advice on what type of sleep study is best for your child.
